CATS Inc is a truly local organization. We were created by the idea and concerted lobbying of a few Ipswich parents of young people with disabilities. This small group of parents were concerned about the future for their sons and daughters when they left school, and the lack of developmental and community based services available. They were worried that their sons and daughters would leave school to go to nothing, losing acquired skills, stagnating in their personal development and unable to live a full life within their community.
As a result of their tireless efforts, in 1993 CATS Inc received a 6 month non-recurrent grant to conduct a research and development project into the needs of young adults with disabilities leaving school. The final document was competed in October 1993. The information collected from families, schools and individuals, formed the basis of a funding submission to the then Department of Family Services Aboriginal Islander Affairs for an individualised post school support service.
The submission was successful and the service became operational in 1994.
The Community Access and Transition Service Inc is a non-profit community based organisation, funded by the Department of Communities, Disability Services and governed by a volunteer Board of Management of dedicated people from a broad range of backgrounds and expertise.
